Greatest Superliners in History
Almost everyone is aware about the ill-fated RMS Titanic after the hit romantic movie released in 1997. Titanic was an ocean liner, a giant luxury ship used for transporting passengers.
During most of the 20th century, ocean liners ferried wealthy passengers across the Atlantic between America and Europe and brought immigrants to the New World, says Premier Ship Models, a company that has some of the best cruise ship models, a company that has some of the best cruise ship models. Most of these great vessels are only memories now, but a few can still be seen. Here are some of the greatest among them.
RMS Olympic
RMS Olympic provided passenger service from 1911 to 1935. After far outlasting her unfortunate sisters, Titanic and Britannic, this glorious ship came to be known as Old Reliable. Due to its tendency to strike other ships, this vessel gained a lot of notoriety. It remained popular for more than two decades before it was eventually scrapped in late 1930s.
SS Normandie
The super-modern SS Normandie, launched in 1932, had a clean upper deck, an elegant clipper-like bow and turbo-electric transmission. The ship enjoyed luxurious appointments during her run, but still struggled in making a consistent profit. After the beginning of the Second World War, Normandie ended up in New York. The ship was scrapped in 1946 after it suffered heavy damage in a fire.
RMS Queen Mary
This British beauty was launched in 1934 to replace the two old ocean liners, Aquitania and Mauritania. This ship quickly grew in popularity during her run, even overtaking the sleek and modern-looking Normandie. Both Queen Mary and her sister Queen Elizabeth were highly sought after by German U-Boats in the Second World War. Today, this ship can be found in Long Beach, Calif in the form of a luxurious hotel.
SS United States
This super-fast ocean liner, launched in 1952, was built for passenger transport as well as military use. The vessel holds the distinction of being the fastest ship to cross the Atlantic. She is currently resting at a Philadelphia pier and awaiting her ultimate fate. This ocean liner is a very popular choice for making scale models these days.
RMS Queen Elizabeth II
QE2 was launched in 1969 after RMS Queen Mary’s retirement during the twilight years of the glorious era of Atlantic streamers. During the period between late 1960s and early 2000s, she was one of the only two luxury ocean liners operating across the Atlantic. This beautiful superliner was retired in 2008 and is set to become a massive floating hotel in Dubai.
RMS Queen Mary II
It had seemed for more than 25 years that Queen Elizabeth 2 would be the only ship to carry on the legacy of the superliners. However, Queen Elizabeth 2’s continued success in cruising and transatlantic passenger transport finally convinced its maker Cunard to launch another ocean liner, Queen Mary 2. QM2, launched in 2003, is the largest ocean liner of all time.
