Former Vice President Pence Joins Trump and Biden with Confidential Document Issues
Former Vice President Mike Pence was in Washington last week to take part in the annual anti-abortion Right to Life march. As he was leaving the capital, he found classified documents tucked away in his home.
The discovery of these documents drew attention to the Trump administration’s handling of sensitive information. Pence’s revelation comes amid an ongoing investigation into former President Donald Trump’s handling of classified information.
After discovering the classified materials, the Pence team immediately secured the material in a locked safe. They then alerted the National Archives of the discovery. A spokesperson for the White House declined to comment on the documents, saying the matter was being investigated by the Justice Department.
The FBI also found and collected classified documents at the Mar-a-Lago estate of former President Donald Trump in August. Both Biden and Pence had previously denied that they had taken any classified materials with them when they left the White House.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed special counsel Robert Hur to handle the investigation. He declined to answer questions about the documents, saying he was examining the president’s role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Pence’s revelation comes as a number of congressional leaders have opened investigations into the issue. Republicans, including Senator Lindsey Graham, have said the documents crisis is moving beyond politics.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer is a Republican from Kentucky. In addition, Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chair Marco Rubio said he wanted to obtain briefings from the Intelligence Community.
