DeSantis Floats Appointing an Accused “Anti Vaxxer” to FDA if Elected President
In a recent interview with OutKick host Clay Travis, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made headlines by firmly ruling out the prospect of a joint ticket with Democrat Robert F. Kennedy Jr., for any political endeavors. DeSantis cited Kennedy’s many liberal positions making him unacceptable on the debate. However, DeSantis did say he had wide agreement with RFK on medical issues and would even consider him for a high level health agency appointment. This is going to spark intense debate over the wisdom of considering Kennedy for a public health position like the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
During the interview, DeSantis acknowledged some areas of shared agreement with Kennedy, particularly on issues related to Dr. Anthony Fauci and concerns about corruption within health bureaucracies. However, the sharp divide on the environment and other issues rule out a VP role.
Kennedy’s reputation as an “anti-vaxxer” has long been a subject of contention within medical and scientific circles. His vocal opposition to certain vaccination policies and his advocacy for questioning vaccine safety measures have led to widespread criticism from mainstream health experts. Many see vaccination as a crucial tool in preventing the spread of infectious diseases and maintaining public health.
The controversy surrounding DeSantis’ consideration of Kennedy for a public health position within the CDC or FDA further intensified after his unequivocal ruling out of a joint ticket. Critics argue that appointing someone with such controversial views on vaccines to a high-level public health role would send the wrong message to the public and undermine vaccination efforts. They fear that Kennedy’s stance could lead to the propagation of misinformation and harm public health campaigns aimed at achieving community immunity.
On the other hand, some supporters of DeSantis believe in the importance of considering diverse perspectives within public health agencies. They argue that open discussions and the inclusion of various viewpoints are essential in shaping effective health policies. Furthermore, there is a large swath of voters that are very hostile to basic public health position,s like the importance of vaccines.
