Our colleges and universities should be devoted to the pursuit of truth and the promotion of excellence. Today, they are beset by political movements that put diversity, inclusion and equality ahead of these other values. This is damaging our schools and doing harm to the country as well. A vibrant democracy like ours needs citizens and leaders who have been trained to tolerate sharply opposing points of view and who have learned to submit their own opinions to the tribunal of reason. Today, our colleges and universities are doing a poor job of preparing their students for the challenging work of democratic life.
