Exploiting AI To Help Find Critical Minerals in the United States
INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.
Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed Craig Knoblock.
They discussed research that Dr. Knoblock is doing at the USC Information Sciences Institute on using AI to help locate critical minerals in the United States. Dr. Knoblock is working on a project with DARPA and the US Geological Survey to create new AI tools that help find critical minerals, such as lithium, cobalt, and germanium, that are needed for things such as building batteries for electric cars and creating microelectronic chips. In this project, Dr. Knoblock led a team of researchers on the problem of creating a comprehensive repository of mineral sites throughout the world where they have found these critical minerals in the past. His team used various AI techniques to automatically extract and integrate the relevant data from mining reports, journal articles, and databases. The resulting repository can then be used in a machine learning system to predict where these critical minerals are most likely to be found in the future.
