Mayor John Whitmire’s administration is clinging to a 1970s mindset on transportation, resisting meaningful investment in mass transit even as Houston’s population explodes and traffic worsens. Rather than embracing proven solutions like expanded light rail and modern bus systems, City Hall continues to prioritize car-centric policies that belong to another era.
At the same time, the city is running persistent budget deficits without a serious plan to close the gap. Kicking the financial can down the road only ensures a deeper crisis in the years ahead. Critical services—from infrastructure to public safety—are already strained, and without fiscal discipline, the situation will only deteriorate.
Adding to the failures is Houston’s backlog of untested sexual assault kits, many of which remain shelved and unanalyzed. Each untested kit represents a victim left waiting for justice and a possible perpetrator still on the streets. It is a scandal that undermines confidence in city leadership and public safety itself.
Houston deserves leadership that looks forward, not backward. Instead, residents are left with outdated transportation priorities, worsening finances, and neglected responsibilities—symptoms of an administration more comfortable managing decline than building for the future.
