Kevin Price, Host of the Price of Business show, which is one of the longest programs of its kind, recently interviewed Carrie Lukas, who is President of the Independent Women’s Forum. In this lively conversation they covered many areas, including:
- The good, bad, and ugly of the “#METOO movement and how, if it goes too far, could actually harm prospects of women when it comes to economic opportunity. The focus is on developing a “balanced approach.”
- Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) effort to bring a free market approach to parental leave. The US government has one of the most limited policies on the subject than any other advanced country. However, conventional policies being proposed by most politicians would likely have an adverse impact on several constituencies:
- Employers might want to avoid hiring women because they are most likely to pursue a leave and do it longer than men (there is substantial research to back this up)
- Would increase an already extraordinary national debt of over $20 trillion, if the government chose to be involved in subsidizing such
- Would take away flexibility for employees on how to exercise their leave.
- Rubio, instead, offers a market based approach that would not increase the debt, but create more opportunities for people to take that leave off for their family in a way that works best for them.
