Kraettli L. Epperson is CEO and co-founder of Vigilant Aerospace Systems, Inc., an independent developer of detect-and-avoid and airspace-management software for uncrewed aircraft. With more than 30 years of experience as a technology executive, he has helped commercialize two NASA patents and participated in more than 50 flight tests with NASA, the FAA and the U.S. Air Force. His work with NASA and Oklahoma State University has produced multiple AIAA research papers, and the company received Nasa’s 2021 Commercial Invention of the Year Award.
A certified FAA Part 107 remote pilot, Epperson contributes to U.S. aviation policy and technical standards through the FAA’s Beyond Visual Line-of-Sight Aviation Rulemaking Committee, ASTM F38 and RTCA SC-228. Heco-chairs the advisory board of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s UAS Cluster Initiative and speaks and writes on UAS safety, detect-and-avoid technology and airspace integration.
They discussed why detect-and-avoid technology is crucial to safely scaling beyond-visual-line-of-sight(BVLOS) drone flights, how proposed FAA rule changes could shape the future of U.S. operations, and what lies ahead for the industry.
