The Kevin Downs Commentaries
On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed Kevin Downs, CEO of Ask An Adjuster, is a Florida native with a finance degree from the University of Florida.
Property insurance customers in Florida and California face increasingly complex challenges that make navigating claims difficult without expert support. In Florida, homeowners contend with some of the highest insurance premiums in the nation due to frequent hurricanes, tropical storms, and rising reinsurance costs. Insurers have tightened policy language, reduced coverage options, and in some cases left the state entirely, creating an environment where claims are often heavily scrutinized or underpaid. High humidity and hidden water damage also make it harder for policyholders to prove loss severity without professional documentation.
In California, the primary threat comes from widespread and fast-moving wildfires. These events can destroy homes completely, leaving homeowners responsible for extensive inventories, code-upgrade cost calculations, and navigating complex debris-removal requirements. Additionally, California’s unique regulatory landscape and the prevalence of non-renewals in high-risk zones mean policyholders must be exceptionally precise when presenting claims to ensure they receive the benefits they’re entitled to.
In both states, a public adjuster serves as a crucial advocate. Public adjusters understand state-specific insurance laws, know how to interpret policy language, and can accurately document damage that homeowners may overlook. They negotiate directly with insurers to secure fair settlements, helping property owners avoid costly mistakes and ensuring they’re fully compensated during an already stressful time.
Kevin Downs, CEO of Ask An Adjuster, is a Florida native with a finance degree from the University of Florida. After starting his career selling insurance, Kevin became a licensed public adjuster following Hurricane Wilma in 2005. In 2006, he co-founded Ask An Adjuster, which has since helped over 60,000 policyholders recover nearly $2 billion in insurance settlements.
With a team of over 80 adjusters, Kevin leads one of the largest public adjusting firms in Florida. His team recently secured an $8 million payout for a Florida community initially told they had no claim and recovered nearly all policy limits for a total loss client in Malibu, California, after she was only paid half! He has seen insurers use faulty testing methods after wildfires to downplay serious health hazards, and knows firsthand how devastating mismanaged claims can be.
To stay ahead of these challenges, Kevin pioneered the “Certificate of Good Condition” program, certifying properties before disaster strikes, so damage can’t be denied later as pre-existing. As he puts it, it’s “insurance for your insurance.” Kevin and his team are passionate about standing up for policyholders and ensuring they receive the recovery they’re rightfully owed—without the need for courtrooms or red tape.
