LumiCup was born of necessity in 2019 when Steve Bauerfeind and I asked why a single-use aluminum cold cup couldn’t easily replace a single-use plastic one. There were no other such products on the market and the world was awash with about 500 billion discarded single-use plastic cups every year. Even worse, projections showed that number would likely double by the early 2030s to 1 trillion plastic discards. The horrifying reality of what all that plastic waste could do to our planet spurred our action.
An often-overlooked consequence of the world’s slackening need for oil to serve the transportation sector because of electric and hybrid vehicle adoption is that oil producers aren’t ready yet to reduce their drilling. If they can’t turn their output into fuel, they plan to turn it into plastic. Industry documents and presentations that circulate publicly show that as fuel use drops, they plan to increase their allocation of oil and gas production into petrochemicals by 80% to take up the slack. The world simply can’t handle that much plastic waste in our ecosystems.
One way to short-circuit at least part of this growth is to swap in products made from infinitely recyclable aluminum for those made from barely recyclable single-use plastic. On a global level, 75% of aluminum cans are recycled each year because the financial incentive to recover the metal is substantial at scale.
From our idea phase through proof of concept, we discovered that another manufacturer launched an aluminum cup in the same space we were targeting – though it’s architecture is quite different from ours. We weren’t the first to market, but we got something of equal value from their move – confirmation that there was a substantial market opportunity ahead of us. And as I’m fond of saying, the early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
We spent a couple of years engineering the optimal production solution for LumiCups. The design we landed on uses about 30% less aluminum than our competitor’s. Because of our patented manufacturing process, that materials advantage will always exist. They are restricted to their legacy process while ours can exploit this more sustainable method. Our cup is less expensive to make, lighter to ship and stock, and infinitely recyclable.
We came to market with a soft launch and a single cup size – our 16 oz. It tends to be a particularly popular size and we had to pick one to start with. However, most customers need a variety of sizes in their operations so rolling out our full suite of sizes was transformational for our business. Now we’re fully accessing sports and entertainment venues, restaurant groups, university foodservice operations, and myriad other hospitality businesses that offer two or more beverage sizes to consumers.
Looking ahead, we have some very exciting partnerships forming with a number of sports and entertainment venues, major distributors and hotel groups. We are preparing to sell cups continent-wide in Europe and in the United Kingdom where there is urgency to halt the use of single-use plastic drinkware. And we hope to debut an inaugural U.S. manufacturing location in 2028.
People have been drinking from aluminum cans since 1959 when Coors rolled out the first one. We are familiar with the user experience, understand how to properly dispose of it and benefit from its unlimited lifespan. Around 75% of all consumer aluminum ever sold is still circulating through our recycling system. The next time you open a drink, you may actually be holding a few hundred molecules of Coors beer can #1.
