When It Comes to AI, Reality Is Rapidly Catching Up to Sci-Fi

On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed Liane Gabora.
They discussed: Whether or not AI is genuinely creative, what creativity is and what it means for humans and AI to be creative, and whether or not AI is genuinely conscious, as well as different interpretations of what consciousness is and what it means for humans and AI to be conscious.
Dr. Liane Gabora is an interdisciplinary cognitive scientist and Full Professor at the University of British Columbia. Her research focuses on how culture evolves, how the creative process works in both humans and machines, and how creativity fuels the evolution of culture, as well as more generally, the different ways in which evolutionary processes could—and do—work. She was the first to develop a computational model of cumulative cultural evolution, to develop an autocatalytic framework to explain the integrated nature of human cognition, and to explain creative insight at the level of neural cell assemblies. Her Ph.D. thesis was the first publication to introduce a quantum formalism for modeling the contextual nature of concept interactions, and she is the first author of the first paper on this topic. She has given lectures on these topics worldwide and has over 200 scholarly publications, and is nearing completion of a book titled Dawn of the Creative Mind: The Origin and Evolution of Culture and Innovation. She also has eight published short stories, and recently completed a novel titled Quilandria: A Novel about Minds, Ideas, and Other Worlds.
