World’s Largest Car Rental Company Provides Multi-Billion Dollar Boost to Canada
Enterprise Holdings, the largest car rental company in Canada, and the owner of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car brands, revealed data showing a significant contribution to Canada’s bottom line and to communities across the country. In fiscal year 2016, Enterprise Holdings’ impact on the Canadian economy was nearly $2.8 billion.

“Enterprise has a significant economic impact in Canada overall, but I think the role Enterprise plays in local economies is our best-kept secret,” said Steven Tudela, Corporate Vice President of Canadian operations for Enterprise Holdings. “As we grow, we hire, spend and give locally. Our goal is to strengthen the fabric of the neighbourhoods where our employees live and work.” This is part of the reason why consumers named Enterprise Rent-A-Car the most trusted automobile rental brand in Canada, according to the 2017 Gustavson Brand Trust Index.
Enterprise’s overall annual economic impact in Canada was significant in fiscal 2016, including the following key contributions:
- $2.2 billion in vehicles purchased in Canada
- $270 million in companywide purchases from Canadian suppliers
- $102 million in provincial and local tax payments
- $216 million in payroll expenses
- $2.4 million in total charitable giving
- $1.6 million in total United Way donations (including Enterprise Holdings Foundation match)
Hiring and Business Growth
New and expanding Enterprise airport and neighbourhood locations and business lines have resulted in hiring in every province throughout Canada. More than 500 new employees were hired into Enterprise’s award-winning Management Training Program last year, which teaches college and university graduates how to run a business, empower teams and provide excellent face-to-face customer service. A major driver of the company’s promote-from-within culture is the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Management Training Program, which is consistently successful in developing new hires into the next generation of business leaders.
With continued growth, expansion, and promotions, Enterprise anticipates steady hiring this year. In fact, Enterprise Holdings’ diverse brand portfolio accounts for more than 750 fully staffed neighborhood and airport locations and more than 5,400 employees across the country. Other transportation services marketed under the Enterprise brand name in Canada include Enterprise CarShare, Enterprise Truck Rental, Exotic Car Collection by Enterprise and Enterprise Fleet Management.
“We’re a large international company. But we have the mindset and the culture of a neighbourhood business,” Tudela explains. “Every time we open a new location, or expand a business line, that’s another Canadian community that we get to be a part of, and that’s what keeps us vital and inspired.” Enterprise projects continued expansion across Canada, with plans to open as many as 15 new neighbourhood branches in 2017.
Community and Local Partnerships
“Community engagement is one of our core values. That’s why Enterprise, National and Alamo employees are empowered to support the local charities of their choosing.” Last year, the Enterprise Holdings Foundation and local Canadian employees collectively contributed more than $2.4 million to local charities. These include the national United Way, the Canadian Red Cross, and Montreal Children’s Hospital, as well as the Moncton Boys and Girls club, the Chilliwack Hospice Society, and many more.
In addition, as part of the Enterprise 50 Million Tree Pledge, Enterprise’s Foundation has funded the planting of nearly 850,000 trees throughout British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario in collaboration with Tree Canada and Trees Ontario. The tree plantings, established in 2006 to celebrate Enterprise’s 50th anniversary and to thank Enterprise customers for their support, play a crucial role in protecting vital water resources, restoring habitats for endangered wildlife and improving overall air quality in the community. An additional 40,000 trees are committed for planting this fall in Manitoba near Riding Mountain National Park.
Also, in late 2016, Enterprise’s Foundation announced one of the largest donations ever aimed at fighting hunger around the globe. The program – called Fill Your Tank – celebrates the company’s 60th anniversary by providing $60 million to address food insecurity. As part of the donation, Food Banks Canada is receiving $1.5 million annually for six years to support operations and infrastructure in food banks across Canada. Additionally, each Enterprise Holdings’ regional subsidiary receives an allotment to support local food banks and food bank charities of their choice, as well.
