How to Recover Damaged NTFS Partition
New Technology File System (also known as NTFS) is a data collating system which is used by a PC’s operating system for retrieving and storing files located on a hard disk. However, the NTFS partition can sometimes get corrupted hence making the files unreadable and inaccessible. Unless your data has been overwritten by another data (in which your data has been lost forever and can never be recovered), it can still be recovered. But before we go ahead and discuss how to recover raw partition that is damaged, there is a need to look at the reasons why NTFS partition occurs in the first place.
Reasons for NTFS Partition
- Unexpected power outage of a computer can cause NTFS partition
- This defect can also lead to corruption of the NTFS file system
- This, in turn, can lead to an error in Windows 7, 8 or 10 and when this occurs, you will need recoverit software to repair damaged partition. This ensures you don’t lose your data entirely but instead get to recover them even when they get lost
- A defect in the NTFS file system will require to be fixed, and this can be done by using recoverit recovery tool, a software that helps you restore your data
Procedure for recovering a damaged NTFS Partition
You can fix the NFTS partition by using the Windows tool located on your computer. The device used is called ‘mounting the disk image,’ this tool helps solve problems relating to missing clusters, cross-linked files, corrupted sectors, and directory errors.
There are three choices to make in mounting disk image on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10
- Double click on dsk/img to enable it Mount. Ensure you have no other file associated with dsk/img as this will hinder the process
- Right-click on the dsk/img file and then select Mount
- On File Explorer, locate “Disk Image Tools,” from the options shown click on ‘Mount.’
- This should fix the NFTS partition issue
How to Repair NFTS boot sector and NTFS MFT
When the NFTS file system has been damaged beyond a certain level, the inbuilt recovery system may not be able to handle the problem. You will need a better solution to the problem, a solution that can be provided by recoverit recovery tool. But before we go on to how the repair can be done, let’s talk about the effect of a damaged NFTS file system:
- A defect in the NTFS boot sector and you will not be able to access your files and documents. Instead you will keep getting a message informing that your disk is not formatted and asking if you would like to format it, do no format as this would lead to loss of all your data. If it’s a Linux mount, you will get an error message. To fix this, boost the OS from an external disk like a flash drive and then launch the Recovery Console. Log in and input the fix-boot command to fix the problem in the boot sector
- On the other hand, a defect in the NFTS MFT will lead to the NFTS saving a copy of MFT, which is called the MFT mirror. If this NFTS MFT is corrupt, NFTS will try to link with the MFT, and this is not good as the files in it may be overwritten. To solve this, open the Check Disk Utility on your Windows. If the Window cannot be opened, try opening from a flash drive. When you have succeeded in booting it, locate the Recovery Console, input the “chkdsk” utility, this should fix the problem.
- However, if the MFT is severely corrupted, then the above procedure will not work as you will keep getting an error message
