STUDY: Super Bowl Ads are Worth Every Plenty

In spite of the pervasive view that TV ads are no longer a good value and that they have been overwhelmed by the power of the Internet, ads for major sports events remain strong. And among those ads none are more powerful than those for the biggest game of the year — the Super Bowl.

A recent study by Betway clearly shows the power of such ads in major sports events in general and the Super Bowl in particular.

According to the findings from the report seen in the infograph below, America’s past time — baseball — has been in decline for years. Because that sport’s World Series is played over as many as seven games it has long lagged behind other sports in general. It is diluted compared to the power of one deciding game. No sport captures that sense like the Super Bowl.

A couple of decades ago, nobody thought of soccer and the United States. The United States was a non-factor. In recent years though the United States had developed major prominence — at least for women — and that is clearly reflective in the ad revenues it has finally garnered.

The NBA has long been popular with advertisers, and its spots garnering $870k per spot is impressive. However, women’s soccer, MLB, and NBA ads are “only” in the hundreds of thousands each. That’s right, only. The Super Bowl and the NCAA Basketball Finals are the only seven digit TV commercial advertising earners.  What may be most impressive about that is that one ad for the Super Bowl brings in more revenue than the cost of one ad in the NCAA Final Four, NBA Finals, Women’s World Cup Finals, and MLB World Series combined.

Nothing can touch the power of a television ad during the Super Bowl.
