To close its $8 billion merger with Skydance, CBS agreed to terms that would have once been unthinkable for a serious news organization: installing a corporate “bias monitor” to review editorial decisions and rolling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. These weren’t mere internal reforms—they were political concessions demanded by Trump-appointed FCC officials in exchange for regulatory approval.
In decades past, CBS prided itself on resisting political pressure. That era is over. By accepting a bias ombudsman—a glorified censor who reports to the company’s president—CBS has opened the door to corporate interference cloaked as “restoring trust.”
It’s the kind of deal you only make when you no longer care about free speech. Or journalism. Or legacy.
There were hurdles. The FCC’s GOP majority pushed for these conditions under the guise of “public interest,” with Commissioner Brendan Carr celebrating the ombudsman as a victory for accountability. The message was clear: toe the line, or the deal doesn’t close.
CBS chose the deal.
This merger should alarm anyone who still values an independent press. What begins with CBS rarely ends there. A precedent is set. And when the cost of doing business becomes your editorial soul, you’ve already lost more than you’ve gained.
