  • Install a house security  system:

Home security systems help to deter the thieves by making sound via the alarm system when they try to break into the house. They may automatically dispatch police to your home, even if it may take time. Besides monitoring such breaches, many security systems provide fire and carbon monoxide detection and other features that help you control your home’s appliancesand lighting when you are away. If a home security system seems expensive to you, then you can just install alarms.

  • Secure your  doors:

Make sure you lock your doors properly and set all the hinges of the entry doors on the inside of the house. Replace the strike plate that is the metal rectangle into which the door latch is inserted while shutting the door. Always replace it as it gets worn out often. Install security film over the glass panes if your doors have substantial amounts of glass panes. If you have sliding glass doors, then put a bar as they have ineffective locking systems. Always upgrade your door locks with high-security ones.

  • Secure all the  windows:

Always lock your windows while leaving. Do not neglect windows while putting too much attention on the doors. Put a security film as it will be harder to break through and will create noise. You may also install security bars on the windows preventing the burglars from entering your home. In case of fire or other mishaps, use the quick-release buttons to release the bars. Always use curtains and shutters. If possible, plant thorny bushes near your windows as this will make it very difficult for the burglars to access the windows.

  • Keep the outside area of your home  well-lit:

Have enough lighting in various parts of the outside of your home that will allow the neighbours to keep an eye and catch any suspicious person. Turn on the front door lights at dusk. You may consider installing motion-activated floodlights near any shadowy area that will provide more security. All these bright lights will keep the robbers away and also help your family and friends safely navigate to the front door of your house at night.

  • Avoid taking any unsolicited  help:

If you have not called anyone for help to come to your house for doing any repairing work, then do not engage any unknown person who may knock on your door to offer any service. These people may lure you outside to talk and let their team member enter your home in the meantime.

  • Keep the outside in tip-top  shape:

Regularly maintain your home and upkeep it as this will make your home look like it is occupied by someone all the time and trimmed trees and shrubs outside your house will eliminate any hiding place for the robbers. An unclear yard may give a signal that nobody is at home.

  • Secure your  garage:

Always keep your garage door closed as it might have tools, bikes, etc. Also, make sure that the access doors are locked and reinforced. These doors that go into the garage and then into your house from the garage should be properly secured just like your front doors. If you have parked your car in the driveway then do not leave your garage door opener in it as the burglars may creak into your car, use the garage door opener to enter your garage and eventually to the house. Lock your garage door all the time, especially at night and if you are out of your home. If the garage has windows, then take a zip tie to thread it to the garage release lever, making it harder to break-in.

  • Know your  neighbors:

You should know your neighbors well and keep an eye out for any stranger around the house. Convicted burglars will not like to have a nosy neighbor and they will prefer to go after a house if they feel they can get away with it. However, if they know that they are being watched, then they are least likely to follow through.

  • Put a surveillance  camera:

Surveillance cameras are very good option to make you aware of your home’s abode while you are away. These cameras will notify you, capture video clips of any unwanted intruder and record useful information for reviewing later. You can find a wide variety of surveillance cameras in the market, ranging from simple to complex systems.

  • Put light  timers:

If you are going for a long vacation, then you can install light timers in your home. These are app-controlled devices that can be monitored by you from any place, provided you have good internet connectivity. These light timers will make your home look occupied even in your absence. You can attach the timers to radios, televisions, and lights and keep the electronics turned on or off throughout the day.
