The Denise Billen-Mejia Commentaries
In this episode, I chat with Satomi Shoji-Grun, my fellow student at HMI, who has added a certification as an Eating Disorder Recovery Coach and uses both to help her clients with weight issues and disordered eating.
Satomi shares that her interest in helping individuals with eating disorders stems from her own personal struggles. She spoke of her difficult experiences with binge eating and purging, which began when she was just ten years old, in Japan. During her childhood, resources and recognition for eating disorders were scarce, leading to a lonely and challenging journey toward recovery.
When she moved to the United States to study for a Masters in Public Affairs, Satomi began counseling and explored various healing modalities, eventually discovering effective methods for managing her disorder and she realized that her true passion lay in direct healing work rather than administrative tasks in the non-profit sector. This realization led her to focus on hypnotherapy, where she feels she can make a more immediate and meaningful impact on individuals’ lives.
Currently, Satomi offers long-term sessions, typically around three months, during which time she aims to teach clients how to use hypnosis for self-help. She believes in empowering her clients to utilize hypnotic techniques to address various issues independently, enhancing their ability to manage stress and other challenges.
Throughout the interview, Satomi’s commitment to healing and her belief in the power of hypnotherapy are evident. Her story is one of personal triumph and professional dedication. Her experiences with eating disorders and the transformative power of hypnotherapy have shaped her approach to helping others achieve similar breakthroughs.
Both of us remind listeners and readers that hypnotherapy is not a one-size-fits-all solution and that each client’s journey is unique but there is relief available.
