The following statement was issued by Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), in response to the Senate vote confirming retired General John Kelly as secretary for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“The American people have demanded that the nation regain control of its immigration policies and General Kelly is uniquely qualified to get the job done. He has demonstrated time and again that the key to defending the nation from terrorism and illegal immigration starts with strong border security. General Kelly knows firsthand the size and scope of threats the nation faces from terrorism, drugs and illegal immigration, and he has demonstrated a commitment to get the job done.

“With years of expertise in combating the influx of illegal drugs from Latin America, General Kelly is the perfect leader to inject renewed energy and commitment into the nation’s immigration enforcement efforts. Under the new Secretary’s leadership and guidance, America’s dedicated immigration enforcement officers will finally be able to do their jobs, after years of having their hands tied by the Obama administration’s reckless, open border policies.”
