Poetry Book Celebrates Summer of Love
West Hurley’s Poetry Barn will celebrate the Summer of Love’s 50th anniversary at their home neighboring Woodstock with a series of events inspired by the underground literary and arts flourish leading up to 1967.
“The core values of the movement—compassion, social consciousness and environmental awareness—are undergoing a vital resurgence,” observes Poetry Barn’s executive director Lissa Kiernan.
On July 21, Poetry Barn will offer the poetry workshop Flower Power: War and Healing, in which participants will read and write poems that revision war & reframe trauma. The next day they will host a house concert, The Company We Keep: Words & Music, in homage to the original summer of love’s musical renaissance.
Poets will delve into the work of female poets in the event Significant Others: The Women Beats on August 19. The series concludes on Labor Day weekend with Dharma Bums: Hiking and Haiku, a two-day festivity inspired by the mountaineering in Jack Keruoac’s iconic novel.
Kiernan notes: “The Catskills’ energy, especially after thirty years of city living, has been nothing short of transformative for me, as it has for generations of artists, musicians, and writers.”
In a final nod to the revolution’s ideals, all Poetry Barn’s Summer of Love events will be available via a “pay-what-you-want” donation, with the first workshop offered gratis to veterans.
