The Soccer Space Race: MLS Isn’t Asking for a Seat Anymore

You are currently viewing The Soccer Space Race: MLS Isn’t Asking for a Seat Anymore

An open message to the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL

You just watched a sport fill your stadiums, your markets, and your headlines for six weeks straight. MetLife Stadium hosted the World Cup final — the same building the Giants and Jets call home — and the atmosphere matched anything either franchise has produced there. That should bother the four of you more than the ratings did, because the league behind it isn’t going anywhere.

The numbers you can’t wave off:

  • MLS drew 11.2 million fans in 2025, averaging 21,988 per match — 19 of 30 clubs topped 20,000, more than any soccer league on the planet.
  • The three-year average sits at 22,443 per match, showing a sustained new baseline rather than a one-off surge.
  • Weekly viewership across all platforms hit 3.7 million, up 29% year-over-year.
  • Apple TV alone is averaging 120,000 unique viewers per match, up 50%. The measurement standard is still evolving, but the growth rate would matter under any methodology.
  • Social impressions hit 13.7 billion, up 17% — the fastest growth rate of any league you compete with for attention.

Why this should keep each of you up at night:

  • You still win on TV revenue and audience size, and that gap isn’t closing this year or next. Gaps like this tend to get discussed seriously in board rooms long before they show up in a quarterly report.
  • MLS is building the fanbase all four of you are chasing — younger, more digital, more global — while you’re still running ads asking that same audience to tune in.
  • The infrastructure this tournament proved out doesn’t disappear. Those stadiums, those crowds, that broadcast machinery all carry over to MLS.
  • Star power compounds. Messi, Son, and Müller have bought MLS several more years of relevance before any of you get to respond.

Panic isn’t the right response. Assuming this stays someone else’s problem is the wrong one too.
