The UK has a New Prime Minister
Rishi Sunak, a former investment banker, is the first Indian to become prime minister of the UK. He is one of the richest politicians in Westminster. During the 2016 Brexit referendum, he supported the Leave campaign, but was seen as too friendly to the European Union. However, that image has changed over the past year. He has pledged to cut taxes once price pressures ease.
The Conservative Party’s leadership election took place on Tuesday, and Rishi Sunak became the next prime minister as his two opponents withdrew. It became a one horse race. The former finance minister is the only candidate to gain more than a hundred lawmakers, and he claimed that he had the backing of more than half the 357 Conservative lawmakers. Mordaunt had hoped to reach that mark, but she withdrawn from the race minutes before the deadline. With the election, Sunak will become the next Prime Minister of UK, and will replace Liz Truss, who resigned from her post.
Sunak is an Oxford educated former investment banker who has been in politics for 15 years. He was appointed Finance Minister under Johnson, when he was 39 years old. In this role, he formulated an effective furlough scheme to help the country recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, he worked as a Goldman Sachs analyst. His family migrated to Britain during the rebuilding process following World War II. He went on to study at Oxford University and Stanford University. His wife Akshata Murthy is the daughter of the entrepreneur N. R. Narayana Murthy, the founder of the software company Infosys Ltd.
