Why Rand Paul Voted for Pompeo After All

For weeks Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) made it clear that the President’s choice for Secretary of State was unacceptable.  That all changed when the final vote came.  Sen. Paul voted for the notoriously neoconservative politician, a man not shy of military conflict who was not shy of entangling the US in global conflicts.  The exact type of conflicts that candidate Trump said he was opposed to.

This week, Senator Rand Paul made a reversal on Pompeo and released the following statement concerning CIA Director Mike Pompeo’s nomination to be Secretary of State:

“I just finished speaking to President Trump, after speaking to him several times today. I also met with and spoke to Director Pompeo.

“After calling continuously for weeks for Director Pompeo to support President Trump’s belief that the Iraq war was a mistake, and that it is time to leave Afghanistan, today I received confirmation that Director Pompeo agrees with President Trump.

“President Trump believes that Iraq was a mistake, that regime change has destabilized the region, and that we must end our involvement with Afghanistan.

“Having received assurances from President Trump and Director Pompeo that he agrees with the President on these important issues, I have decided to support his nomination to be our next Secretary of State.”

Yet there is nothing in Pompeo’s history to make one think he will abide by these promises.  In fact, Donald Trump has become increasingly involved in the type of conflicts that he ran against.  The libertarian community is very disappointed in this reversal by Sen. Paul.
