Allure Security: New security challenges and preventing data breaches
By Moira Alexander, Lead-Her-Ship Group
Mark Jaffe, Chief Executive Officer, discusses Allure Security’s changing priorities and 2018 outlook.
Allure has united security scientists and experienced cybersecurity business professionals in a shared mission to help customers stop data loss. Born in the research labs at Columbia University, Allure’s product Novo is a Data Loss Detection and Response (DDR) technology that tracks and protects documents – without agents – inside and outside the enterprise walls.
Mark Jaffe joined the leadership team of Allure Security as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the company’s next phase of growth as Chairman and CEO. He co-founded the behavior analytics firm Prelert and saw it through two rounds of funding and market success before its acquisition by Elastic in 2016. Prior to Prelert, Jaffe was with McAfee Security and OnLink.
When asked if business goals or priorities have changed for security businesses for 2018, Jaffe explained that enterprises lack the ability to track their data once it leaves their hands, making it possible for breaches to go undetected for “months or longer.” Companies are exploring new technologies to find ways to track and protect their documents outside of their company, Jaffe asserts. In 2018, Allure Security plans to invest in new disruptive technologies such as deception technology Jaffe said. Deception technology is designed to confuse hackers by creating realistic and enticing simulated files, as Jaffe puts it, these files provide hackers with “bogus data rather than valuable IP.” Other changes that will occur in 2018 due to shifting security business goals Jaffe suggests will involve companies evaluating and investing in “data detection and response technology and document behavior analytics, which focus on the geographic location and behaviors attached to a file.” He indicated that monitoring all the endpoints of a network has not been a sufficient approach; instead, companies are going to shift towards protecting the data itself.
Jaffe indicated that Allure Security spent a good portion of its early “formation developing its patented technology and bringing it to market.” Their goal for 2018 is to focus on their growth strategy by expanding on their early successes and getting the word out to larger enterprise audiences about their “industry-first data detection and response technology.”
When asked what some of the trends in the coming years will be?
Jaffe said he believes 2018 will see a shift to more stringent data privacy policies, especially for companies doing business with European companies or citizens. Europe is introducing new data privacy legislation in May of 2018, called the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR Jaffe explains. The policy he continues imposes new regulations on how “Companies process, collect, store, and dispose of personal data, and businesses are going to be required to show proof that they are handling this data in a safe, responsible way that doesn’t compromise any European citizen’s privacy.” Companies that fail to comply with the regulations will be fined, up to as much as four percent of their annual revenue. Jaffe said, he expects major U.S. corporations will get flagged in 2018 for failing to comply with the new European regulations, as they may think the regulations do not apply to them or that they only apply to “security vendors or tech companies.”
How does the new direction of Allure Security benefit their customers and other stakeholders?
Allure Security’s goal of focusing on new disruptive technologies for 2018 will help their customers protect their data better and prevent breaches Jaffe explains. Allure Security believes “Real-time, accurate visibility of data beyond the network perimeter is the next big security challenge that must be solved, and the key to preventing a data breaches.”
