Kay Bailey Hutchison has always been an interesting part of the political landscape in Texas.  Moderate in a very conservative state and female in a largely male dominated state as far as politics.  Most Texans wondered, “how did she get in that position?”  Those positions include Treasurer of Texas (1991-1993) and US Senator from Texas (1993 to 2013).  To many, what might be the most interesting position, is seeing her as an appointee of Donald Trump as the Permanent Representative to NATO.  She has been front and center in the recent summit that the US has been participating in.

What is surprising about the Hutchison appointment is that the former Senator was very close the the Bush family, even getting an endorsement from George H.W. Bush when she ran for Governor of Texas in 2010.  We all know how the President feels about the Bush family. In addition, she ran against Rick Perry in that year’s Republican primary.  Perry is now Trump’s Secretary of Energy.

In the below video you can see Hutchison to the right of Trump during a very awkward meal, as the President lectured Germany for its “cozy” financial relationship with Russia and the nation’s “failure” to properly support NATO.

Regarding the issues the US has with Russia (a big part of the conversation during the summit), Hutchison had the following to say:

According to the NATO website:

“Ambassador Kay Bailey Hutchison was sworn in as the Permanent Representative of the United States to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on August 15, 2017.  From 1993-2013, she served as a U.S. Senator from Texas and was also elected to a Senate leadership position.  Ambassador Hutchison gained extensive international experience and developed a deep understanding of NATO as a Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.  She also served as Chairman of the Military Construction Subcommittee and as a Member of the Defense Subcommittee on the Senate Appropriations Committee.  She served two terms as Chairman of the Board of Visitors of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

“Prior to assuming her duties, Ambassador Hutchison was a prominent attorney at Bracewell, LLP, an established international law firm in Dallas, Texas. Ambassador Hutchison also served in the Texas House of Representatives, as the Texas State Treasurer, and as Vice Chairman of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.

“Ambassador Hutchison earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas and a degree of Juris Doctor from the University of Texas School of Law.  She calls Dallas home and has two children.”
